Besides rendering the room with an antique old world charm, a gramophone is also capable of emitting clear and resonant music. The music storage medium used by gramophones, called a record, is basically a thin disc on which a continuous spiral groove runs from the edge towards the centre on both sides of the disc. When playing the record, it is rotated on a turntable in a clockwise direction. A needle, called a stylus, is mounted vertically over the disc and rests over the groove. The vibrations in the stylus, as the groove moves past it, are converted into an electrical signal that is transmitted to an amplifier or speakers.
Records are usually made of black vinyl. Sometimes carbon black is used to both strengthen the disc as well as increase the opacity. The grooves are pressed into this vinyl surface. The wider spread grooves, seen generally in the 6 mm of space near the outer periphery of the disc, do not have any sound data. This system is followed so that the stylus can be placed on this portion at the start, without damaging the recorded part. Additionally, there is around 1 mm of equally spaced, silent grooves between each track. This ensures that the listener is intimated about a new song being played.
To obtain the proper tempo for a song, the disc is required to rotate at a specific speed, which is usually set at either 33 rotations per minute (rpm) or 45 rpm. Stereo records, with recording over two channels provide a more wholesome audio experience. While having functional value when played, records have become collector?s items today due the technology being in existence for more than a century.
